A Letter From The Directors
Welcome to the San Diego Ballet website
San Diego Ballet’s mission is to excite, enrich, and entertain our diverse audience through an imaginative presentation of quality classical and contemporary dance.
From the world premieres of acclaimed choreographer Javier Velasco to our family-friendly Nutcracker, from Mambo to Tchaikovsky to World Beat to Shakespeare, San Diego Ballet offers something for everyone!
Twenty-three years ago, we began the San Diego Ballet with the hope of creating a place where local dancers could find not just an artistic home, but a means of financial support as well. Growing up in San Diego, we were both aware of the wealth of talent in Southern California that was forced to move elsewhere to have a career as a dancer. At that time we were the only local dance company to offer all our dancers salaried positions for an entire season. We are now facing new challenges as San Diego’s living expenses have risen dramatically and our dancers are forced to make the hard decision of leaving San Diego or dancing for passion in poverty. Their passion has been our blessing but our goal is to bring ballet up to the same financial standards as the opera and symphony. San Diego needs to have all three to be considered a true cultural destination.
This is why your support is so important. Your donation helps secure the Ballet’s artistic and financial future. You can take pride in knowing that your gift makes a difference on stage, with our dancers and in our community.
Throughout the year, there are opportunities to visit us at DANCEPLACE/San Diego – a significant new studio destination for dance in Southern California. An extraordinary setting to showcase the artists whose innovative approach continues to transform our city.
We hope that you find our redesigned website informative and a destination to return to again and again. Not just for ticket and performance information, but as a window into the artistic process.

Sincerely,
Robin Sherertz-Morgan Javier Velasco
