ALICE:WONDERLAND was the second ballet created in the nine-year collaboration between SDB, Culture Shock San Diego and Young Audiences of San Diego. Other pieces have included Carnival of the Animals and Firebird. ALICE:WONDERLAND features not just Velasco’s modern/ballet fusion staging but hip hop dance performed by San Diego’s first and finest hip hop crew, Culture Shock San Diego. Says Velasco, “When the music starts its just impossible not to get swept up in the mystery and magic of the story. It was a natural choice for us, fun for audiences of all ages. “
Also on the program will be the world premiere of two new pieces, the sultry ECHALE SALSITA and the classical SUITE ITALIENNE.
ECHALE SALSITA is Spanish for “Throw on some hot sauce.” “We have a group of new dancers with the company this year,” says Velasco. “I wanted to give them something that they could show off a bit in and also allow me (and our audience) to get to know them as dancers. I was listening to NPR in the car and heard this great jazzy, Afro-Cuban lounge music. It’s the kind of stuff I use a lot, but darker. It seemed like a great way to initiate the newbies to life at SDB and our rep.”
SUITE ITALIENNE is set to Stravinsky’s piano and violin concerto of the same name. “When people think of Stravinsky they either think of the lush sounds of Firebird or the dissonance of his later works,” says Velasco. “But this little gem has an enormous amount of clarity, and intimacy, AND beautiful melodies. I keep coming back to this piece over and over, but or some reason it hasn’t been able to make it into our programming. I love it because it doesn’t try too hard. It just sort of flows out like a clear stream. And yes, it’s going to be a tutu ballet. Classical… and romantic.”
